Winding down the roads from Quito you'll transition from high grassland ecosystems found in the mountains to lush rainforest all within a couple of hours.

The cloud forest is defined by its elevation. The clouds start their lofty ascent in the coast and are pushed up the mountain. As they experience colder temperatures, water condenses and they lose their moisture as rain which supports an abundance of life.

Day 3
The cloud forest may be even more diverse than the Amazon - however it's not very well studied. Each mountain and each elevation acts as its own biological island spurring rapid speciation. In Mindo alone there are
600 bird species so keep an eye out from your window!

The cloud forest averages 8 feet of water annually! All this moisture makes it possible for giant epiphytes to crowd onto skyscraping trees using them as a free ride to the limited light peeking through the canopy.

Mindo and other areas of Ecuador that are biodiverse but not as recognized as the Amazon rely on communities to protect the rain forest. Private entities and community members buy the land to protect it from logging, farming, and mining. Your ecotourism directly contributes to the protection of this amazing place.
